3 Most Effective Eye Exercises That Improve Eyesight

October 10th, 2008

Okay, they are not so much eye exercises, but techniques that are, in my personal experience (since I’ve restored my vision), as well as others, most effective of all. 2 of them are geared towards relaxing our eye muscles, while the third one improves out vision, through stretching/strengthening it. So, let’s get into it!

You may have heard of this one, it’s been given a name “Sunning” (by Dr. W. H. Bates, a New York (U.S.A.) ophthalmologist, the father of natural eyesight improvement), and you may have even done it before, but do you know how to do it in the most effective and safe way? Safety is quite important throughout all exercises, and especially this one, because doing things wrong may cause things that range from a slight delay in your improvement, to a fairly sever eye problem. Sunning, as you’ve probably already guessed, involves the sun, and you may have heard all oculists and doctors out there all in one throat telling us that sun is bad for our eyes, that it damages them, etc. etc. Well, although this is true, sun actually has a very powerful healing effect that helps us strengthen our eyesight. That is why we need to take care when doing Sunning.

Here’s what we do. First of, we fully relax our eye muscles, while doing Sunning. This should, preferably, be done outside, or at least next to a window. Now, you should only do Sunning during an early sunrise or a late sunset, or else you are risking of getting yourself eye floaters, that will, eventually form a Cataract. If you don’t have sun near by, then you may use a light, 150 watt, bulb. It, most probably, won’t be as effective as using the sun, but will still help relax your eye muscles, which is what we want. Another highly recommended thing to do is you should cover one of your eyes with your palm, while Sunning. Make sure to use your palm, and not your fingers, as this not only insures the best cover of sunlight, but also has a healing effect, since our palms are known to emit a strong healing energy. Now, sit down on a chair, facing the light, cover one eye, and spin your head like a pendulum, from side to side. Don’t focus your vision on anything, just swing your head from right to left, and vice-versa. Do this for 2 minutes or less, and then do the same with the other eye.

Second exercise is called “Palming”. Palming should always be done after Sunning (i.e. Palming on it’s own is fine, but necessary after Sunning), in order to reinforce relaxation. Palming is a harmless exercises, in that you cannot over-do it, even if you sit at it continuously for hours (although that is not recommended). There were, apparently, a few people in Dr. Bates’s practice that were going almost blind with their vision, and after sitting, doing palming for 20 hours continuously were able to fully regain their vision (i.e. they saw the last line of the eyesight test from 20 feet away). Palming is also geared towards eye muscle relaxation. To start with, rub your hands vigourously against one another until they are warm. Then put them one on another in a cross, and cover your face so that the centre of your palms rests exactly on your eyes. Try to eliminate all light, and close your eyes. The minimum you should spend at this is 5 minutes, and, for the best effect, it is recommended to spend 10. After you’re done, put your hands down while keeping your eyes closed, then inhale deeply for a supply of fresh oxygen to your lungs (also relaxes our body, therefore our eye muscles), and open your eyes slowly. You will then, depending on how well you’ve relaxed, see better than before.

A couple more tips… When seeing, try to do so without any effort on your part. Every effort on your part causes tension, thus bad eyesight. When palming, don’t stare, instead, think of something nice. This is quite important because closing our eyes doesn’t automatically guarantee relaxation – our eyes can still stare, therefore are as tensed as they wore when your eyes were open. This is also true for when we sleep. When we close our eyes just before we switch off into The Never-Land, we need to make sure that our eye muscles are not tensed, or else we’ll most definitely have tensed eyes throughout our whole sleeping period, which kind of defeats the point of rest, altogether.

Now, this last exercises helped me improve my vision from almost -5 both eyes (deteriorating fast), to literally an eagle vision now. I’ve never seen so well before in my whole life, and I am forever grateful for that! So pay attention. What you do here is you stretch/strengthen your vision. (If you are “hyperopic” (or long-sighted), then you stretch it on objects that are closer.) I’t s as simple as that. That technique (if you can call it that!) alone will happily improve and even restore your eyesight, proving you do it well. Unfortunately what I found is that when I stretched my vision while I was just walking down the street, it did little good… So here’s what worked for me: as I sat in our university’s library, with fairly dim lighting (normal lighting during the day), and I looked outside a window that was roughly 25 meters away from where I was sitting. But I didn’t just look, instead, I had forced (to start with, until I could do it via other techniques, like through controlling my mood &, eventually, by simply blinking in a certain way), then, when I got the desired flash of good vision, I kept that good vision for as long as I possibly could. It lasted for a second or two at the start, but then quickly started to last longer and longer, until, eventually (literally over a week, from that point) my vision had returned to perfect (pre my 13 year old age, which was ten years ago, and that’s the time when I was first equipped with my first ever, and so much hated thereafter, vision aid!). What you should look for in this exercise is a place where you can most easily keep that flash of good vision for longer. For me, this place just happened to be our university library. A very important point to remember is when you get this good vision, you keep it while you’re fully relaxed, or else it’ll not be as effective (if effective at all), You will possibly experience discomfort and even a slight pain in your eyes, like I did… This is good, IMHO, because it means that your eye muscles are stretching (at least it did for me). You will most probably see a significant improvement in your vision after this exercise.

It’s all so simple (it makes me angry that we are not told this by anyone!), and yet it is so powerful that it may make your knickers wet… (brrr, an extremely unpleasant experience, always have a spare with you. - just kidding!)

Thanks for the helpful article post. I have been having a lot of eyestrains lately. And I am afraid that my vision would just be blurred. I stay long hours in front of the computer so, this exercises are beneficial for me. Thanks again…

Can you please help elaborate the last method/technique of yours…??? didnt quite understand it..
    Thanks a ton,
    God Bless

thanx for the article of eyesight exersises, I would like to know how often do you think I should do these exercises to improve my vision faster and how looking to a far scene would improve my vision while actually while looking I cant see the details clearly because I cant the things that are far clearly, meaning I see blurred images??
My vision is -3 in both eyes, and now really Iam trying to avoid wearing my glasses but in parties I cant prevent myself from wearing the contact lenses because I want to see all the details. so do you believe that these 3 exercises are enough for my to restore my vision back, I want to believe it but I think I need to train my internal eyemuscles, thats why I am using the pen tip exercise, I concentrate on the tip and move it far and close while fixing my eyes on the tip, do you think that this exercise will help me to restore my vision in addition to your three exercises, sorry for the long talk.
    thank you

thanks for all the eye training instructions.

i would like to know, is it possible to improve my vision even if i have to wear glasses during class (to see the board or screen)?

my refractive error is -3.5 dioptres.

    once again thanks a lot.

  5. admin

Hi Rayhan, dude, in short, I think yes, it may well be •possible•. However, I think it may take you longer. You see, from what I know about our eyesight, when you wear glasses, you tense your eye muscles. and If you wear glasses in which you see perfectly well again… well.. you tense your eye muscles even more.

If i ware you, I’d go to your teacher, and ask her/him to put you in the row where you will be able to see stuff, whilst wearing weaker glasses - just enough to see the board. And only wear these tings when you need them. I.e. walking, eating etc. not being one of them. And try not to wear them while you’re on your school hols. It’s a much easier sacrifice to make, for a fairly fast and painless eyesight restoration.. Would anyone disagree?

  6. admin

Nony, if you want things faster, then approach it systematically. I.e. these 3 exercises will correct eyesight, but it probably won’t be as fast as if you took the time to do study stuff and do everything that I say i did in my book for example…

In my personal opinion, and I am fairly certain of this, you can restore your eyesight without doing any exercises at all, but just by simply stretching your vision every day. The key here is to focus your vision on something that you find easiest to focus upon, and then keep at it for as long as you can, BUT relax at the same time.

The art of most effective eyesight restoration is in seing fluctuation when not trying to see, i.e. staying fully relaxed. When you “get” that, you’ll see what mean, because you’ll start seing huge improvements in eyesight every single day. BUT, from experience of people that followed the course I’ve based mine on, it’s not recommended going faster than dioptre per week.

    Dear irfan,

First off, I apologise before you for taking weeks to reply to you. Where are you with your eyesight now? It iskind of hard to explain these things in text, practice makes perfect here. You need to find a place where you find it is easiest for you personally to relax your eye muscles. You can and should actually stretch your eyesight, while relaxing, everywhere you go and anywhere you are. Don’t just sit there, hoping that your eyesight is getting better. Fluctuations is what imprecise eyesight, and more of them you create, faster your eyesight will return to perfect. (And there are various techniques to get these flashed/relaxation, and I’ve, what I think to be, the most effective one - which is to smile and to be happy. This works very well.) But there will be one place where you will be able to do that more effectively, and you should, at a chance, stay there, and work there, while working with your eyesight at the same time.

All the best to you all, Andrei.

PS Anything can be done, you just need to spend time at it. I.e. if youre working at a computer 24 7, or if you read close up all day, you can do these exercises at the same time. Just don’t wear your glasses, instead, work with your eyesight.

  9. nony

thanx for the reply. I am following your exercises daily and not wearing my glasses at all and it is quite fine with me and I am not looking for fast results because I can take the time needed for my eyes.
    thank you

    Hi Admin,

Interesting material. I’ve been a bit of a skeptic on sunning. Glad to see you recommend it be done early or late in the day. Too many on the web don’t make such qualifications.

I think if done safely like this it can have some benefit in relaxation, but also I think sunning (in safe conditions - I think lights are better) is beneficial for myosis. It basically exercises the pupil muscles.

Hey, I have a few questions. I tried your technique of stretching my vision but I’m not sure what exactly i’m suppose to be doing. Am I suppose to be sort of squinting to get the flash of good vision… or just simply stare at something far away until it becomes clear and hold it? And also, I shouldn’t wear my glasses when not necessary right? Thank you in advance :D

  13. Dave

Im not really sure what you mean by stretch your vision

  14. Maxim Vinokourov

I liked your post. I am interested in trying your technique, but as ‘cnazn’ already wrote, I don’t really get what I have to do… ?

  15. Iris

Hi! I just read your post and I’m very interested in it. Unfortunately, I don’t live in Russia or anywhere near there so I can’t get good therapy sessions..I can’t even find therapy sessions here in town.. I’m still 15 yet my grades are already like -4.00 and -4.50.. I really hope I could correct this naturally by following your suggestions :] but i’m not so sure if i’m doing the right steps.. are there any daily exercise you could suggest? :>

  16. cb25

    Hey Dave & Iris,

If you combine what this site is talking about with the info on avoidglasses + the Eye Gym you will get excellent results.

    Cheers

  17. admin

Hi all, just looked through this article again, looked through the last technique etc., it’s not easy to explain… Thanks for all your quality comments!

    Andrei

  18. Sy

Im confused about the last part, do i have to squint to get the perfect view, or keep on blinking and adjusting until i get the perfect view?

  19. admin

Ideally you need to relax your eye muscles well enough to see without doing anything.

If you cannot do that yet, then do whatever gets you to see, and *then* relax & keep it in that state, remembering the state, so that next time you get there faster & stay there for longer.

    Andrei

  20. omair

    hey Andrei,

thanks alot to share this fantastic information with everyone. Its good to find people that share their knowledge and personal experiences without charging you money.(which seems to happen alot at this day in age). I believe sharing brings tons and tons of happpiness in ones life and thats what you are destined for!

I stopped wearing glasses 8 years ago because i just knew they weren’t good for my eyes. So i spent all this time not being able to see the person on the other side of the street but i didnt care.

Really looking forward to do these exercies. Thanks once again buddy, you are a great man! :)

  21. admin

Hey Omair, I definitely agree with you, and thanks for your kind words! Eight years without glasses? That’s a very long time! I’m surprised your eyesight hasn’t corrected itself over such a long period without glasses… Definitely go for it and improve your eyesight, as it’s not that difficult.

    Andrei

  22. Omair

    hey Andrei,

yeah, i came to realise that by wearing glasses, everytime i went to an optician to get my eyesight tested, it kept getting weaker and weaker so i stop bothering with them.

I think the reason my eye sight hasn’t corrected itself is probably because i always squinted my eyes and put alot of pressure on them to see, after i threw the glasses away. I didnt know anything about relaxing your eye muscles until about a week ago. :)

how long would you recommend doing the stretching exercise for? Is palming better before the stretching exercise or after? im still trying to find a good spot for the stretching exersice. I wont be able to do Sunning much since i live in Scotland and the sun comes out 3 or 4 times a year, for half a day!!!!! :)

  23. admin

    Hey, Omair,

Lol, that’s unfortunate… They say that sun play’s a major part in one’s mood… and I totally agree with that,,, because it does in MY own life, ha!

It’s a good decision from your part to forget glasses, and restore your vision instead…. And having a positive attitude in everything you do play’s a big role in general health, and, from your posts, you don’t seem to lack positive attitude, so you will get there quicker - just remember to apply that, and you’ll be much more than just “allright”.

I would recommend stretching your vision for as long as you can really, because it helped me considerably, and so you want to concentrate on restoring your eyesight, and then just forget about it.

Do Palming beforehand, as this will relax your muscles, and make the stretching part easier. Remember that you actually need to relax, and put *no effort in seing*. THAT is what amplifies the whole thing. BY putting strain, squinting etc., you’re only making the matter worse. Oh, and it doesn’t heart to do Palming afterwards also :o) In fact, if any, try doing that one exercise as often as you can - once every hour or so, ideally.

You should also replace the sun with a dark room and a candle, which, yet again, helps to relax these eye muscles. (I.e. do the same as with the Sunning exercise, only with a candle instead of a light - just hold it in front of you, or put it on a table somewhere).

Good luck, and keep at it UNTIL IT’S DONE, and THEN forget it (after telling all of your friends, family, and, of course, your Dog :o).

(Okay, now it’s back to studies for me…)

    - Andrei

  24. omair

    hey Andrei,

thanks alot for the help, buddy. Will give you a shout soon with the improving results :)

what about stretching vision for if your (short sighted)

Not sure what these figures mean but this is what it says on the card.

  26. Max

I’m so happy I found this site!!! I have -2.5 in both eyes and I just started doing exercises 3 days ago and I really want to improve my vision =]

  27. Gy

how do i know if im straining my eyes before i go to sleep, i cant tell

  28. Bets

I have believed in improving myopia for a long time and have
stopped wearing my glasses except when necessary. But I
haven’t really improved my vision due to bad habits, such as
daydreaming, staring at the computer, and being tense. So I
am writing to say that at least today, for one day,
I will try to see the world around me better, just look at the
world around me and not be in my own little world. It helps
to resolve a lot of inner conflict in order to do this.

  29. Vladimir

    Hi Andrei,

I’ve heard about eye exercises a few weeks ago. Many people believe it works and so do I, it is proven as you can find in many articles on the web. I wanted to ask….

My eyes are both -1.75, I am nearsighted and I was wearing contact lenses for 5 years. I removed these lenses 3 weeks ago and already noticed some fluctuations in my eyesight even though I haven’t done any exercises. But I would like to restore my eyesight completely as soon as possible.

How much should I do the exercises? 30 minutes a day or more? Are there any side effects from overdoing it?
How long will it take when doing it properly?

    Thanks for your help

    Have a nice day!

    Vladimir

  30. Michelle

    Hello!
I want to know, my eye sight is -2.25 in one and -2.5 in the other I think. When I don’t wear contacts (which I wear full time), it’s so blurry I can hardly see anything clearly that’s more than a foot or so. (That’s normal I hope). Anyway, do these exercises really improve your eyesight so they can permenently be back and have perfect vision without these contacts? Should I do these exercises with contacts or not? Because without them, as I said before, I would hardly be able to see anything clearly so how would the last method work out? THANK YOU!

  31. Michelle

Also, for the last method, basically you just stare at something until it becames clear? How do you “stretch” your eyes? I don’t really understand how if you have really bad vision, how you can see something clearly for about 2 seconds? It has happened to me before though. And how long should I do these exercises everyday? Thanks again.

  32. Karolina

    Hey Andrei,

Well, I will probably one of these many people who write to you because “they’re doing eye exercises and see no improvement at all”.
Yes, I am doing eye exercises at least 3 times a day (though I must admit that I didn’t know about that last technique of yours with the streching and I intend to try it) and I try to control my breathing etc.
But I don’t see the improvement, no matter what I do, nothing works.
At first it helped me a lot, after 2 weeks of exercising I was able to walk the street without glasses. But it doesn’t mean that my eyesight is perfect, and I so badly wish it to be.
    Please help me

  33. MoonSun

Hey, Admin. Im really interested about all these. I left some comment in your cureyoureyes forum but u havent reply me..Are you still studying? Hope to hear from you soon. and PLZ. Help is needed here.

Hi, Andrei. Thank you very much for this blog it helps me very much to understand more about eye execises. You previously “published” a pdf document with the file name of numbers (it was started with a 4, i forgot since i renamed it), would you recommend me to do only the 3 exercise in this article or also do the exercises in the pdf document? Thanks.

  35. P. Lam

    Thanks a lot!
    im working on it!
    I 13 and i am -3 both eyes
    i hope this works!
    thanks

  36. Jessica

Hey Andrei, I just stumbled on your blog and i’m really intrigued. My vision is -4.00 in both eyes and I just started your techniques. I have a question, right now I can’t function during the day without my contacts so i’m wondering how you did it? I mean did you wear your glasses and take them off when you did the exercises? Thanks :)

  37. Miki

    Hi,
I have been wearing glasses for 33 years!OMG… and I think I am too scared to take them off. Can’t wear contacts anymore - since my eyes aren’t lubricating. Won’t do laser. My number is over 8 and I have a small astigmatism in each eye. I work in front of a computer 9 hours a day - I can’t do this without glasses. I am going to start trying your exercises, but I will still have to wear glasses… will the exercises be effective?

    ALSO
my son is 6 years old. 6 months ago he was diagnosed with .5 vision and 2.5 cylinder. He has glasses - and the headaches have stopped. How can I help him fix his sight?
    my 3 year old has .5 cylinder…
how do I help them with these exercises, aren’t they too young?

    Miki

  39. Blind =_=

    Oh dear GOD thank you!
The last two days I started remembering what my dad told me, that when nearsighted, your eyemuscles relax, so I started thinking:
You HAVE to be able to build up those muscles so i went online! And eureka! I found a bunch of exercises, I will try them because my eyes have failed me and they’re beginning to get worse! I’m only fourteen and they’re -2.0 and -2.25!
